How the tissue samples were obtained in the field.

Only a small bit of meristematic tissue is required to extract the DNA.

After measuring the size of the crown a pocket knife was used to remove a small sample of tubercle.

The blade was wiped clean with a paper towel and then with an alcohol wipe in between each sample.

Each tissue sample then went into a snack-sized ziplock bag with the location and specimen number recorded on the bag with a permanent marker.
After being collated by specimen number they were placed in a larger plastic ziplock bag and stored on ice in a cooler until we reached the lab at UNAM.
