This Mammillaria meiacantha is growing
only a few yards away
from Lophophora williamsii echinata in Brewster County, Texas.
Notice that this species
is hardy enough to have survived the freezes and drought that killed
much of the candelilla.
Mammillaria
meiacantha often gets confused with Mammillaia heyderi.
They are easy to recognize and to differentiate if a person is familiar
with both of them. Compare them for yourself below.
Mammillaria meiacantha (right) contrasted to M. heyderi
(left).
Both are under cultivation in the Sul Ross Cactus Garden
